Spring in Pollensa Mallorca celebrations and events
Pollensa
North Mallorca
Spring in Pollensa. It has many activities to offer due to its location close to the beach and the surrounding stunning Tramuntana Mountains. It’s rich history also makes it a town full of local celebrations.
Easter in Mallorca is a big thing. Every village has its own traditional celebration, Formatjada being the treat for spring in Pollensa. Locals bake formatjada a pastry with fillings of cream cheese, pumpkin jam or chocolate at home.
In Pollensa the events start on the Thursday before Easter (18.04), with the most interesting event to watch, on Friday; the Devallement or the devilment. Locals dressed in traditional clothing take the statue of Jesus down the Calvari steps into town. A spectacular event to watch with the steps are illuminated by naked flames as this solemn procession re-enacts the events of Good Friday.
Each Sunday, Pollensa is always busy as the weekly market is on. Grab a chair in the main square, drink a cafe con leche (white coffee), eat an Ensemaida (local sweet pastry) and watch the many people go by. On Easter Sunday Jesus meets Mary on the main square and when they do so, it is celebrated by the sound of rifles shot from the rooftops surrounding the square.
On Tuesday 23th of April, the Easter celebrations are closed by a special one: San Jordi or St George. This actually the Patron Saint of England and Catalonia. In spring in Pollensa, the festival is centred on Plaza Vela where the library is located. Three statues of a Dragon, Saint George and a princess rise above the crowd. Join the locals in their Catalonian tradition, and give each other a book or a rose. Or have a stroll around the book stalls, enjoy the concert with local music or let your children join one of the activities.
Mallorca is known for its high-quality wines. But did you know that 95% of all wine production is actually drunk on the island itself?
