Wine of the Month…
If someone asks me to recommend a Mallorcan wine and write something about it, it’s crystal clear which one comes to my mind first: The Sió.

Born in 2000 as a tribute to the grandmother of the Ribas family, grew up under the tireless care of Araceli and Javier, the youngest of 13 generations of passionate winemakers, and set out to be one of the very few superstars among Mallorca’s red wines today. A classic, after only 20 years. Actually unnecessary to introduce it. I do it anyway, because I love this wine.
Four grape varieties are in there: Around 60 % is Mantonegro, our local hero. A plant, that only reaches its full potential at retirement age. And then supplies black fruit aromas, spice and an earthy, warm note. Terroir. Completed and perfected by the three sovereigns, who always come along, packed with world fame: Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Every single grape is picked and strictly sorted by hand. Of course.
12 months in well selected french oak barrels. That must be where the chocolate injection happens… or is it cinnamon? Nutmeg? Prunes? Strawberry cheesecake? It’s all that.
All that ends up as a powerful, but very well-balanced caress package for body and soul, underlining a tasty meat dish as well a romantic evening for (wine) lovers. Price: Around 20 €. Available all over the island, wherever people get together to celebrate wine. Until it sells out. 50.000 bottles per year, disappearing faster every time. Currently it’s the 2017 vintage which is about to run out, but no worries, 2018 is coming soon. And it will perform again. Cheers!
